A great Southern plant for your yard

2025 is my second year to have Mexican petunias growing right outside our kitchen windows. I love ‘em, y’all.

They are considered invasive, but I love ours. They bloom daily for months in the summer and fall. Here it is October 16 th , and they are still blooming. They’re strong little critters.

Here is a photo I took from our kitchen window. I used this plant to hide my wife’s Texas symbol. At least during the blooming months. That dang symbol still shines through. (Like those Texans, it’s persistent.)

(Texas: America’s strongest, most sinewy culture. More on that in another blog entry.)

I water them three times a week and cut ‘em back to the stem about two inches above the soil when they stop blooming. They survived outside last winter, but they’re vulnerable. Here’s a great article about Mexican petunias in Southern Living (There’s no paywall.) that tells you everything you need to know about care for them.

Three days a week for months, Pam, our housekeeper, cuts a dozen or so blooms and they make a nice flower arrangement for our kitchen, but they only last a day. But, see in the photos, they are lovely flowers on the counter in our kitchen.
